Pepe Mateos – La Vida (Self-released, S001)

sPepe Mateos is set to embark on a bold project that will see him self-release a new single every month of the year in 2021. The first one lands on January 14th and sets things in motion in fantastic style.

Mateos has been making music for more than a decade, always cooking up unique sounds that take electronic music in interesting new directions. He has found favour with the likes of Richie Hawtin, Adam Beyer and Joseph Capriati for his energetic dancefloor workouts on labels like Toolroom, Circus Recordings and Time Has Changed, all while also running his own Flow Musique outlet with friend Davirus. He has been a resident at Sankeys Ibiza as well as playing all round Europe and now draws on all those experiences for this new project.

The up coming series will show him exploring a wide range of styles and sounds, each and every month of 2021 with every release influenced by the notion that, “the future is not at all clear. Everything that we thought had been established as fundamental is shaking.”

This standout first single ‘La Vida’ is an expression of the ups and downs of Mateos’s own life, a real reflection of his personality and “a track I want to be remembered for. A story with a happy ending. A development more inline with ancient music than with current music. A track with dynamic range, a story that begins and ends with hope.”

Musically, the track is a richly melodic house cut with bubbling drums. The keys and smart effects bring a sci-fi feel while the drums roll on, and lush soft-focus melodies, sweeping synths and subtle vocal sounds all add colour 8and a futuristic sense of soul as the tune sweeps you off into the cosmos.

This is a fine start to a project that is set to be a true showcase of Pepe Mateos’s assured studio skills.
