Cleric – Fragments Of A Portrait (Clergy, CRG013)

Pick of the weekend: Cleric – Fragments Of A Portrait (Clergy, CRG013)

Cleric returns to his Clergy imprint this September with his ‘Fragments Of A Portrait’ EP, accompanied by a remix from Wrong Assessment.

Manchester’s Cleric has grown to become one of the most promising figures in contemporary Techno over the past few years with releases on the likes of Soma, Figure, ARTS and of course is own Clergy imprint where he returns to here, amongst regular shows at some of the leading hotspots for Techno across the globe such as Berlin’s Berghain and Tresor, Concrete Paris, Fuse Brussels and Razzmatazz Barcelona amongst many more.

Title track ‘Fragments Of A Portrait’ leads with oscillating synth lines, murky bass tones and modulating percussion all intricately unfolding throughout the compositions six-minute duration. ’27 Hours’ follows with expansive metallic percussive hits, thunderous low end and gritty mid range bass stabs at its core whilst evolving ride cymbals and shuffled hats gradually ebb and flow within.

‘The 6th Day’ is up next, employing a vacillating kick and sub combination as square wave bass leads float above the driving foundation before Wrong Assesment’s remix of ‘The 6th Day’ takes a more direct, groove-driven approach with airy atmospherics, resonant synth tones and weighty 4/4 drums. Bonus cut ‘Sentinals’ then closes the package, with swinging drums, reverberated atmospheric bursts and an underlying tension throughout.
